Design Your Own Charcuterie Board – How to Stencil & Seal Wood with Food-Safe Products

Step #1 How to Apply Dixie Belle’s Voodoo Gel Stain


 Before I apply the stain, I use a 180-grit sandpaper for a quick scuff sand. This helps to open up the grains for the stain to absorb into the wood.


Then wipe it off with a clean rag to remove any dust.



I’m using Dixie Belle’s Voodoo Gel Stain in “Tobacco Road”. This is a water-based stain & a great food-safe product for this project.


Mist with a little water to help the stain glide on and soak evenly into the wood. You don’t need to spray it with water, but I find it helps the stain apply more evenly.


I use a Dixie Belle Applicator Pad to apply the stain, but you could also use a lint-free cloth. Apply a small amount to your cloth, then wipe on. It’s pretty easy!



I do one side then let it dry before doing the other side, so I don’t mess up the finish.


Don’t’ forget your edges! Let this dry for a few hours before moving onto the next step.




Step #3 How to Use Dixie Belle’s Silkscreen Stencils


  I’m using the Dixie Belle’s “Roses” Silkscreen Stencil on the front. I love silkscreen stencils because they’re self-adhesive, easy to use & give a crisp clean line every time.




First peel the paper backing off the stencil & set aside for later. You’ll need to reapply that paper after you clean off the stencil & let it dry.


Center your design & smooth it down, making sure it’s completely flush. If your stencil isn’t completely flat, your paint may leak outside of the design.



Since I cut my stencil close to the design, I taped off the sides to prevent paint from getting onto the board.


Each stencil comes with a squeegee applicator for applying your paint, or you could use a spatula or credit card.


The color I’m using is Dixie Belle’s Chalk Mineral Paint in “Drop Cloth” which is also water-based and non-toxic.



Get a small amount of paint on the tip of your squeegee, a little goes a long way.


Scrape the paint over the design, making sure you push the paint through the screened area. You want to make sure that paint is covering every bit of your design before you remove the stencil.



Remove the tape carefully, but quickly so your paint doesn’t dry. Then gently peel off the stencil to reveal your masterpiece!


Let your paint dry for 72 hours before sealing. If the paint isn’t fully dried, the sealer can smear your paint.


Step #3 How to Seal Wood to Make it Food-Safe


 For this last step, I’m using Dixie Belle’s Howdy-Do Hemp Oil to seal the wood for a water-resistant & food-safe finish.


I use the clean side of the Dixie Belle Applicator Pad from earlier. Start with a small amount on your rag, it doesn’t take much. Wipe it on, then let it dry, it’s that simple.
